Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program

Message from Division Chief

I am delighted that you are considering a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at  New York Methodist Hospital, an affiliate of the Weill Medical College of Cornell University.

New York Methodist offers comprehensive clinical pulmonary and critical care medicine training, focused training with state of art facilities available. In addition to the PCCM Fellowship, the Department of Medicine offers training to over 100 internal medicine residents and fellows  in general cardiology, interventional cardiology, hematology & oncology and gastroenterology.

As a 612-bed hospital located in the famed Park Slope and only 5 miles from Manhattan, New York Methodist provides fellows in Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine with a breadth of clinical experience that will allow them to feel comfortable practicing this discipline in any setting.  We pride ourselves on a warm, collegial relationship and close supervision of the fellows, while giving them the independence to assume greater responsibility as they progress in their training.

Our division has had enormous growth over the past five years and I would like to take this opportunity to describe our hospital and the other facilities where the fellows rotate during their training.

The trainees get a broad based experience including areas such as state of the art critical care medicine, full complement of pulmonary interventional procedures (including use of ultrasound in the ICU, percutaneous tracheostomies, rigid bronchoscopies, stent placement, medical pleuroscopies, Pleur-X catheters for palliation, etc), sleep medicine (both adults and pediatrics-including exposure to a Ph.D. scientist who performs research), and management of insomnia (with a pulmonary attending and psychologist), a fully-functional pulmonary hypertension program with a dedicated nurse coordinator, pulmonary physiology, advanced lung cancer patients, two continuity clinics (including a tertiary referral clinic for advanced lung disease) and in one of the largest sickle cell clinics in the country.

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) is a specialized cancer hospital.  The PCCM fellows perform critical care consults and manage the MICU patients with a designated, supervising attending physician.  MSK offers a unique educational experience in the management of critically ill patients with cancers, many of whom develop complications from drugs, surgery, and disseminated cancers.

Columbia Presbyterian Hospital has one of the most well known lung transplant programs in the country.   A one month mandatory rotation plus additional elective rotations in lung transplant are available to the fellows.

The PCCM fellows get a unique exposure in the management of end-stage lung disease, and become well-versed in the criteria for lung transplantation, harvest runs, and in management of post-transplant complications. They also attend out-patient rehab for the month they are doing their transplant rotation.

Kings County Hospital is located approximately five miles from New York Methodist Hospital and has one of the busiest Level I trauma centers. The 3rd year fellows rotate for a one-month mandatory rotation in trauma.  The trauma service is jointly headed by two full time attending physicians.  The trainees get an excellent opportunity to manage trauma, gun shot wounds, intra-abdominal catastrophes, neurosurgical trauma and Ob-Gyn emergencies.  The trauma center cares for over 1,500 cases per year.  Approximately 500 patients assessed in the emergency department are admitted to the critical care unit.

The quality of education depends, more than upon any other factor, upon the quality of teachers.  We have a dedicated staff of physicians who take pride in their involvement with the fellowship training program.  We are confident that the program will train well-rounded and competent pulmonary and critical care physicians.

I am pleased to invite you to apply for a fellowship in Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine at New York Methodist. If you have any questions or would like to visit the Hospital, please feel free to call me at 718-780-5835. Fellowship inquiries should be directed to our coordinator, Ms. Patrice Balistreri at pmb9002@nyp.org

Our program only accepts applications over the Internet using the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). For details regarding the application process, contact your dean's office or The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)
