Rotation Schedule

During each year of training, the house officer assumes more and more responsibility for direct patient care. Currently, there are ninety-seven positions in the three-year program.

PG 1

  • General Medical rotations: 8 months
  • Emergency Department: 1 month
  • Ambulatory Medicine: 1 month
  • Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK): 1 month (maybe ICU or regular floor)

PG 2

  • General Medical rotations: 2 months
  • Ambulatory Medicine: 2 months
  • Subspecialty Elective or MSK floor: 1 month
  • Night Float: 1 month
  • Medical Intensive Care Unit: 2 months
  • Cardiac Care Unit/Telemetry: 2 months
  • Pulmonary Step-Down unit: 1 month

PG 3

  • General medical rotations: 2 months
  • Ambulatory Medicine: 2 months
  • Medical Triage (MTR): 1 month
  • Subspecialty Electives: 4 months
  • Medical Intensive care unit: 1 month
  • Cardiac care unit/Telemetry: 1 month

Chief Residents
The 3 chief residents (PGY4) are responsible for the administration and supervision of medical resident staff members and serve as the liaison between the director of the department and the resident staff. There are also (2) PGY3 associate chief residents, who aid in scheduling and other administrative activities.

Fellowships
New York Methodist sponsored fellowships are currently available in the subspecialty areas of cardiology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, hematology/oncology, and pulmonary/critical care medicine.

Medical Students
New York Methodist is a major clinical teaching site for students from the  State University of New York/Downstate Medical Center, and St. George's University School of Medicine. At any given time, third and fourth-year medical students are participating in patient care and academic programs. Our residents not only have the opportunity to help train the next generation of physicians, but also reap benefits from the educational milieu stimulated by these students.
