General Residency Information

Housing

Resident physicians can usually be accommodated in Wesley House, a modern twelve-story apartment building located directly opposite the Hospital entrance, or in one of the other apartments owned or operated by the Hospital. Rentals include gas, electricity, heat, and air conditioning. All apartments have combination kitchen and dining areas and a bathroom. Studio apartments have a combined living room and bedroom. All others have separate living room and bedrooms.

Married residents without children qualify for studio apartments. One-bedroom apartments are usually assigned on the basis of number of children; two bedroom apartments may also be assigned to be shared by two residents. No provision is made for members of the family other than the spouse and dependent children.

The Staff

Full-time attending physicians have teaching appointments at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. Many members of the staff are involved in clinical research and publish in peer-reviewed journals. Residents are encouraged to participate in such research and to initiate their own projects under the sponsorship of attending physicians.

The Library

The Health Science Library supports the mission of the Hospital by providing current and authoritative information in medicine and health care. The Library is a primary resource for those involved in patient care, medical education, research and healthcare administration.

Library users have access to online medical databases including PubMed, Ovid, UpToDate, AccessSurgery, Stat!Ref, EBM Reviews, NEJM, CINAHL, Nutrition Care Manual, and the Library catalog. The Library print collection contains 3,300 textbooks and 160 current journal subscriptions.

The Library is open to all employees, attending physicians, residents and students affiliated with New York Methodist Hospital. A hospital ID badge is required for entry. Persons not affiliated with the Hospital must apply to the Librarian for permission to use the Library.

The Library is open and staffed seven days a week.
 Monday -  Friday 9:00AM – 8:55PM
 Saturday  10:00AM – 1:00PM and 2:00PM – 5:55PM
 Sunday  10:00AM – 1:00PM and 2:00PM – 4:55PM

The Library is temporarily located in a trailer next to the physician’s parking lot on the corner of 6th Street and 8th Avenue, opposite the Hospital’s Carrington Pavilion.

To find out more about the Library and services call 718-780-5197.

Schedule

Schedules for residents are prepared in compliance with ACGME regulations and with the New York State Department of Health, Regulation 405.

Insurance

Through a collective bargaining agreement between New York Methodist Hospital and the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR), each resident is covered by the Voluntary Hospital Staff Benefits Plan. Representatives of the CIR will furnish information regarding the specific benefit plan provisions or you may contact the CIR Benefits Office directly.

Vacation
Residents are entitled to four weeks of vacation per year (from July 1 through June 30), and one approved extra-mural course or meeting during the senior year.

Uniforms

The Hospital provides each resident with six uniforms annually. These uniforms are laundered at no cost to residents.

Other Benefits

Residents receive meal vouchers and parking tickets while taking call. Each resident receives an allowance of $525 each year of service for the purchase of books, journals, CD-ROMs, state mandated medical licenses, licensure and medical board exams, PDAs, and educational/professional software. Any unused portion of the allowance will be accumulated from year to year. On-call rooms with computers and televisions are provided. Specific departments may offer additional benefits.
