Diabetes Management in Children -- 718.246.8603
There are two major types of diabetes. Type I, or insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, sometimes called "juvenile diabetes", occurs when the body makes little or no insulin. It usually appears suddenly. Children with type I diabetes are said to be insulin-dependent; they must receive daily injections of insulin.
Children with diabetes, and their families, have special needs related to the challenges presented by a child who is changing physically and emotionally while living with a chronic illness. Both children and their families may find the support groups organized at NYM's Diabetes Education and Resource Center especially beneficial.
