More than one third of all medical emergencies nationwide involve children, and studies have shown that children treated in a pediatric emergency department receive faster, more effective care.

Located within New York Methodist Hospital's main emergency room, the pediatric emergency service is a self-contained area staffed by physicians certified in both emergency medicine and pediatrics, and by registered nurses with specialized training.

Everything in the pediatric emergency service is geared toward treating children and their families: all equipment is "child-sized", the patient gowns feature cartoon characters, and the staff is sensitive to the needs of parents, as well as children. In addition, whenever possible, traditional anesthesia, which involves an injection, isn't used - instead, children are given lollipops to achieve the sedation.

The separate pediatric waiting room is open from 11:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.  Children are treated in the adult area when the pediatric area is closed. The pediatric emergency service is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
