Improving Your Body and Mind

To enrich the lives of our patients and members of the Brooklyn community, NYM offers programs and classes that help you better understand your own health and how you can help to support and improve the well-being of your loved ones.

Maternity and Childbirth Classes

New York Methodist works hard to provide expecting parents with the resources and education they need to be well prepared for their little one’s arrival. We are proud to offer the following courses in maternal and childbirth education to our community.

For more information on or to register for any of the classes below, please call
(866) NY-BIRTH (866-692-4784).

Prepared Childbirth Course

New York Methodist Hospital offers daytime, weekend and evening Prepared Childbirth Education classes. Classes can be completed in four weekly classes or in one eight hour session.

Classes cover:

  • Stages of Labor
  • Breathing and Relaxation Techniques
  • Pain Management
  • Newborn Care
  • Cesarean Birth
  • Tour of the Hospital

Registration is required and space is limited.
It is best to arrange for registration for this class during your sixth month of pregnancy. This will help ensure that there will be room for you to enroll at the proper time.
There is a fee for this class. Receipt of payment is required to attend class. Payment instructions are given at time of registration.

Breastfeeding Class

Designed for expectant mothers and their partners, this class - led by one of the Hospital's certified lactation consultants - covers a variety of topics, including: getting started, how to latch the baby on correctly, how to make enough milk, how to tell if the baby is getting enough milk, benefits of breastfeeding, and common problems. Questions and discussions are encouraged.

Classes take place at 501 Sixth Street, 3rd Floor, Room 3KC.

Maternity Tours

Tours of the labor and delivery areas are offered every Tuesday. Registration is required and space is limited. Visitors should be aware that if the birthing center is fully occupied, it may not be possible to see a birthing room. While taking a tour of the birthing center is not mandatory for patients who plan to have their babies delivered at NYM, it is highly recommended.  If you are registered in a Prepared Childbirth Education Class, please be aware that a tour is provided.

For more information or to register, please call (866) NY-BIRTH (866-692-4784).

Family Caregiver Program

The Family Caregiver program enhances patient care while creating a higher level of comfort for families. The program provides family members with opportunities for increased participation in the care of their loved ones. Please speak to a patient representative at 718.780.3375.

Patient and Family Support Groups

New York Methodist Hospital recognizes that support groups can play a significant role in helping patients and family members to manage during a period of illness or even to facilitate healing.  We offer a number of support groups on the Hospital campus.  Trained leaders and other members of the group provide information, advice and shared experiences. Find a group.

Social Work and Case Management

Patients who are admitted to the Hospital are supported by an experienced team of case managers and social workers who are dedicated to ensuring that each patient receives high quality care and a safe discharge or “check out” from the Hospital. Before leaving the Hospital, a case manager will visit the patient and family members to determine if services will be needed once the patient returns home. These services could include rehabilitation, home care and nursing services to name a few. To learn more about the many services offered through social work and case management, call 718.780.5533.
