Caring for the Mind, Body and Spirit

To see that the needs of the whole person—mind and spirit as well as body—are met, New York Methodist has chaplains available 24 hours a day for spiritual and emotional support for all patients staying at the Hospital.

NYM has three places of worship:

  • Phillips Chapel located in the Miner lobby across from the Security Desk;
  • Jewish Prayer Room, located in the Carrington Pavilion Lobby, across from the elevators; and
  • Muslim Prayer Room, located on the 5th floor of the Wesley House, 501 Sixth Street.

Each is accessible 24 hours a day.

To meet the special dietary needs of Jewish families, the NYM cafeteria provides kosher food (snacks and hot meals), supervised by one of NYM’s rabbis. There are, moreover, kosher foods and food warmers maintained in our sunny and comfortable Bikur Cholim respite room, across from the Jewish Prayer Room in the Carrington Lobby.

For Shabbos and the high holidays, on which orthodox Jews are unable to travel, NYM offers 2 Bikur Cholim overnight rooms. (Please contact Housing at 718.780.3204 to reserve.)

Representing Interfaith Clinical Ministry at Its Best

Chaplains at NYM can come from any faith tradition, and will visit all patients on their assigned units regardless of their patients’ religious affiliations. While a chaplain is always available for prayer, immediate support, or the provision of basic religious materials (Bible, Siddur, rosary or prayer rug) he or she is also ready to connect patients and their families with the specific rituals and services offered by their particular faith groups. For example, the chaplain can arrange for a Roman Catholic Eucharistic minister to bring communion on a daily basis or a priest to perform an anointing of the sick. Similarly, the chaplain can contact an Imam or other clergyperson on request. Jewish patients at NYM enjoy regular visits by one of Pastoral Care’s Rabbi’s, who can provide other worship materials (talliths, tfillin), and be reached at any hour during a crisis.

Our Pastoral Care services are an essential feature of NYM’s holistic approach to healthcare. Our representatives work in every patient area, sit on a variety of Hospital committees, conduct diversity training for physicians and much more.

Plus NYM has a one-year Clinical Pastoral Education program, accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc.
