IMRT (Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy)

What is IMRT?
Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) delivers a precise dose of radiation to a specific body area. This method reduces the amount of radiation to which the rest of the body is exposed. A CT image is used to create an accurate image of the tumor so that the IMRT system can deliver the appropriate amount of radiation for the specific tumor.

Before the Exam
Remember to wear loose comfortable clothing and you will be asked to remove all jewelry, hairpins, eyeglasses and dentures.

During the Exam
The procedure will take about 30 minutes. During this time, you will be positioned and measured on the alpha cradle bag. Alpha cradles are custom foam that can be molded to a patient’s body. Typically the foam is underneath the patient which improves positioning, immobilization and comfort. The Alpha cradle is used for most parts of the body, especially the upper body (e.g. lung and breast), extremities (e.g. leg and arm) as well as abdomen and pelvis.

After the Exam
Your doctor will see you regularly during the period of treatment which lasts up to 7 weeks. He or she will discuss with you the side effects you may be feeling from the treatment. The side effects can vary depending on the tissue receiving radiation therapy.
