Accurate diagnosis and staging, which determines how far cancer has spread, are critical to successful cancer treatment.  In recent years there have been significant advances in technology.  These advances mean quick and often painless screening examinations and highly sophisticated diagnostic evaluations.

New York Methodist's Pathology Department tests samples taken at the Hospital or in a physician’s office.  These tests may include:

• Screening specimens such as PSA (prostate specific antigen) blood samples or PAP smears
• Biopsies taken during surgical or stereotactic procedures
• Blood work related to ongoing radiation or chemotherapy treatments

Pathologists at NYM perform fine needle aspiration biopsy, which is a quick and nearly painless technique.  Stereotactic breast biopsy is a non-surgical procedure done on an outpatient basis.  It provides quick results and is available at the Hospital's Women's Diagnostic Center.

The New York Methodist Radiology Department provides a full spectrum of the most advanced imaging technologies. 

In addition, genetic testing may be useful to determine an individual's chances of developing cancer.  Testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, which may be predictors of breast or ovarian cancer, is available through the NYM cytogenetics program.  The program also offers follow-up genetic counseling. 

Patients already diagnosed with cancer may wish to have a consultation or get a "second opinion."  Physicians affiliated with the Institute are available to consult with you, evaluate previous test results, or recommend additional diagnostic procedures.  If a diagnosis of cancer is confirmed, these doctors discuss treatment options with you.  If appropriate, our physicians direct you to the services that provide the care and attention that you need.
The three major treatment methods for cancer are:

• Surgery
• Chemotherapy
• Radiation therapy

Dealing with a single case of cancer often requires using two or even all three treatments.  All three methods are fully represented by physicians affiliated with the Institute for Cancer Care.  This insures that you receive the best possible cancer treatment at New York Methodist Hospital.
