Endocrinology is the study of the hormone-producing glands that control basic body functions such as metabolism, growth, and sexual development. The glands secrete the hormones they produce directly into the bloodstream. Many of the hormones produced by the endocrine glands interact with each other to maintain the proper balance. The endocrine system consists of the:
- Hypothalamus, which secretes hormones that stimulate or supress the release of hormones in the pituitary gland
- Pituitary gland, which secretes hormones that control most of the other endocrine glands. It also secretes other hormones, including those that affect growth and childbirth
- Pancreas, which secretes insulin and glucagon, hormones that affect the body's absorption of sugar, it's main energy source
- Adrenal glands, which secrete cortisol, the hormone that affects metabolism, blood pressure, sodium and potassium balance, as well as male and female hormones
- Thyroid gland, which secretes thyroxine, triodothyne, and calcitonin, affecting metabolism, body heat, and the regulation of the brain, heart, muscles, and bone growth
- Parathyroid glands, which secrete parathyroid hormone that affects calcium levels in the blood and bone
- Gonads, which are the male and female reproductive glands (testes and ovaries). The testes secrete the male hormone, testosterone, which stimulates sperm production and male characteristics. The ovaries secrete estrogen and progesterone, female hormones that affect the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and other female characteristics.
Each of these glands must produce just the right amount of hormones; if too much or too little is produced, various endocrine disorders will result.
The Institute for Diabetes and Other Endocrine Disorders is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of these disorders. In addition to a team of endocrinologists, the Institute's panel of physician specialists includes otolaryngologists (doctors who specialize in the ears, nose and throat), general surgeons, head and neck surgeons, neurosurgeons, obstetricians, infertility specialists, radiation oncologists and radiologists, as well as many other healthcare specialists, such as nutritionists and health educators.
