Biplane Angiography Technology  for Neuro and Vascular Conditions

As the world of image-guided minimally invasive surgery has expanded, so too has New York Methodist Hospital's capacity to effectively treat patients with stroke, vascular disease, aneurysms, and other complex neurological and vascular conditions.

New York Methodist is one of a select hospitals in the region with this state-of-the-art technology.  Bi-plane angiography equipment provides sharp, high-resolution images that enable physicians to see minute blood vessels in great detail. 

The images are displayed on two separate planes, or angles, simultaneously on separate screens. This allows physicians to have dramatically better visualization of arteries and vessels in 3-D, which can cut surgery time-in many cases by as much as half.

Bi-plane angiography equipment replaces the need for multiple injections of x-ray dye, thereby reducing the amount of contrast fluid used. It also uses less radiation than traditional brain imaging equipment. 

Another plus is that the equipment has CT scan capability, which can enhance the effectiveness of some procedures and allow the patient to have an additional test without leaving the room.  The technology enables physicians to insert cathers into the blood vessels of the brain and remove the blood clot causing a stroke, restoring the normal flow of blood.

Treatment for peripheral artery disease is also improved with bi-plane imaging, which reconstructs the artery clearly so the degree of blockage is visible, allowing physicians to view its position throughout the stenting process. In other cases, doctors can use the technology to treat certain tumors of the brain, aneurysms and other conditions. 

Patients may even receive this minimally invasive treatment in lieu of surgical procedures.
