Peripheral Neuropathy and Muscle Disorders -- 718.246.8614

Peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage) and muscle disorders may be caused by diseases such as diabetes, kidney failure, AIDS, or by diseases of the nerves or muscles. In some cases, nutritional deficiencies may be the root of the problem. Other causes include mechanical pressure, pressure resulting from repetitive motion or staying in one position, a tumor, direct trauma due to injuries, vascular or collagen disorders such as lupus, scleroderma or rheumatoid arthritis.

Although there are many causes of peripheral neuropathy and neuromuscular disease, they produce similar symptoms, including weakness, numbness, paresthesia (burning, tickling, pricking or tingling), and pain in the arms, legs, hands or feet.

The Neuropathy Program at NYM offers highly-qualified neuropathy specialists and advanced technology for diagnosing neuropathy in the early stages. We offer:

  • Clinical examinations and tests such as electromyography, specialized blood tests, nerve and/or muscle biopsies
  • Therapy to control an underlying condition (such as diabetes), surgery to remove a tumor, repair a ruptured disc, or decompress a nerve; physical therapy, splinting, or lifestyle changes that result in avoidance of pressure (for conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome)
