Services for Children

Identifying mental disorders in youngsters can be tricky for health care providers; children differ from adults in that they experience many physical, mental and emotional changes as they progress through their natural growth and development.

They're also in the process of learning how to cope, adapt and relate to others and their enviroment. For these reasons, any diagnosis of mental disorder must consider how well a child functions at home, within the family, at school and with peers, as well as the child's age and symptoms.

Treating mental illness in children helps to prevent similar disorders in their adulthood. The good news for parents ( and children) is that effective treatment is available for children's psychiatric disorders.  Among the most common illnesses are attention deficit hyperactive disorder, bipolar disorder, anxiety and depression, conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, schizophrenia, eating disorders and tic disorders.

Child psychiatrists today use a combination of treatments, which can sometimes involve medication and almost always include some type of behavioral therapy.

NYM's adult and child mental health services bring together the best of contemporary biological psychiatry and the most effective psychotherapy strategies. Our board certified psychiatrists and licensed clinical psychologists are joined by a specialized team of skilled psychiatric nurses, social workers, activity therapists, nutritionists, and physical therapists. We also have a large network of specialists that are routinely involved in the care of our patients.
