Vascular disease, or “atherosclerosis,” refers to the hardening of the arteries. This happens because of a clogging build-up of plaque in any of several parts of the body. Depending on which arteries clog, atherosclerosis could impact the following:
- Cardiovascular disease – with risk of heart attack
- Cerebrovascular disease – with risk of stroke
- Renovascular disease – with risk of kidney failure
- Peripheral extremity arterial occlusive disease – with risk of gangrene and loss of limbs or abdominal aortic aneurysms
These diseases are common causes of death or disability in people over the age of 60.
Vascular disease also includes a number of painful and disabling disorders of the veins, such as varicose veins, spider veins, and leg ulcers.
The Institute's team includes specialists in vascular surgery, neurosurgery, radiology, and neurology. The Hospital maintains a state-of-the-art, on campus Vascular Laboratory. It is accredited by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories. Vascular disease and cardiac disease are often related. Therefore, physicians affiliated with the Institute for Vascular Medicine and Surgery work closely with specialists affiliated with NYM’s Institute for Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery.
