Genetic Testing and Counseling Program -- 718.780.5256
Couples who are planning a pregnancy and individuals at risk for inherited birth defects or genetic disorders may wish to undergo genetic testing and counseling. The knowledge gained through genetic testing may lead to a clear diagnosis and appropriate treatment, to the prevention of a condition in a high-risk individual, or to a decision to avoid having a child with a devastating disease.
At New York Methodist, genetic counselors provide information and support during pre- and post-test counseling. A range of genetic tests is available, including tests for Ashkenazi Jewish genetic diseases, such as Tay-Sachs, Canavan, Niemann-Pick (Type A), Gaucher, cystic fibrosis, Fanconi anemia, and Bloom syndrome.
Comprehensive genetic testing is also available for hereditary cancer risk assessment. This includes counseling and genetic testing for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, hereditary colon cancer and other cancer predisposition syndromes. NYM offers a range of genetic tests and counseling for genetic diseases, including:
