Reproductive Endocrinology and Fertility Institute -- 718.780.5065

About 5.3 million Americans suffer from infertility.  It is a condition that affects an equal number of men and women.  Infertility occurs for many different reasons and finding the source is often difficult.

The Fertility Institute at New York Methodist  opens the doors to couples that have not previously been successful in the attempt to bear children.

The Fertility Institute provides comprehensive fertility services in a friendly and comfortable environment.  A bright and spacious reception area leads to on-site laboratories and examination rooms equipped with ultrasound machines and other state-of-the-art equipment.  The team of specialists includes reproductive endocrinologists and infertility nurses.  Each patient receives personal attention because we understand the frustration and emotional stress faced by people who have trouble conceiving a child.

Diagnosis

The first step couples take at the Fertility Institute is a thorough evaluation of both the man and the woman.  In the case of the woman, anatomical abnormalities resulting from the following may cause infertility:

  • Fibroids
  • Previous infections
  • Congenital problems

Endometriosis, which occurs when the lining of the uterus grows outside of that organ, is another common cause of infertility.  However, there may also be a problem with ovulation, which can be determined through testing.

If there is a problem with the sperm, a more comprehensive evaluation of the male partner takes place.

Treatment

Fertility treatments vary based on the cause of the condition.  In some cases, surgery corrects anomalies that are preventing conception.  Surgical procedures performed include:

  • Tuboplasty
  • Lysis of adhesions
  • Myomectomy
  • Ovarian cystectomy
  • Microsurgical tubal reanastomosis
  • Correction of congenital abnormalities of the uterus

Ovulation problems are treated with fertility hormones that induce ovulation.  When the sperm count is low, intrauterine insemination (a process through which the sperm is collected and then inserted into the uterine cavity) may be used.  Other treatments used at the Fertility Institute include:

  • Donor sperm insemination
  • Microsurgical fertilization
  • Assisted embryo hatching
  • Sperm preservation
  • Anonymous or directed egg donation

Perhaps the most well known treatment is in vitro fertilization (IVF).  A woman undergoing IVF is given hormones to stimulate the production of eggs.  Eventually the mature eggs are removed and fertilized in a laboratory by sperm collected from the male.  Usually about eight eggs are fertilized at a time.  Several of these embryos are then placed inside the uterus.  This increases the chances of successful implantation.  Embryos that are not inseminated may be frozen and stored for future use.

NYM also treats recurrent pregnancy loss.  We address problems such as luteal phase deficiency, thrombophilia, and hormone imbalances.
