Alphonzo Grant

It was the perfect storm: the stress of a winter chest cold, a dusty home renovation, and playing a bit fast and loose with his inhaler.  Alphonzo Grant had set himself up for a major asthma attack.

Anesthesiology Residency Program

Application

General Information

The Department of Anesthesiology at New York Methodist Hospital provides comprehensive clinical anesthesia services using state-of-the-art technology. Working closely with surgeons, obstetricians, and other physicians, the anesthesiologists administer anesthetics for a wide variety of medical and surgical procedures. This includes anesthesia care for surgery in the Operating Room, as well as for procedures done outside of the Operating Room such as ECT, endoscopy, cardioversion, radiology and cardiology procedures.

The Obstetric Anesthesia Service provides analgesia for labor, and anesthesia for cesarean sections and other obstetric procedures. The service also manages post-partum pain in conjunction with the acute pain service. A dedicated obstetric anesthesia service operates twenty-four hours a day to ensure continuous coverage and immediate availability.

The Pain Management Center offers comprehensive outpatient pain evaluation, diagnosis and therapy. Therapeutic modalities available to the pain specialists include nerve blocks, spinal cord stimulators, intrathecal pumps, radio frequency ablation and lysis of epidural adhesions.

As an active academic department, we have an extensive lecture schedule, and maintain a variety of clinical research projects. We offer an accredited residency program in Anesthesiology. We are also a clinical campus for medical students and for the nurse anesthesia students from Columbia university and University of Medicine & Dentistry in NJ. The academic faculty members are all board certified or board eligible.

The small size of our residency program promotes a friendly and collegial atmosphere among the residents, faculty and staff. Our residents can expect to get a disproportionately large exposure to regional anesthesia and obstetric anesthesia, and are closely mentored in both clinical education and research.

Application

The Anesthesiology program at New York Methodist Hospital is an accredited four-year program. Applications for CA-1 year (PGY2) are to be made one year in advance. There are thirteen CA-1, CA-2 and CA-3 positions. The Department of Anesthesiology at New York Methodist Hospital does not currently participate in ERAS. A universal application, or copy of ERAS application, should be mailed directly to the department. The paper application should be accompanied by a curriculum vitae, dean's letter from medical school, at least three letters of recommendations from clinicians with whom you have worked, medical school transcripts, personal statement and USMLE scores. International medical graduates are required to produce an ECFMG certificate and are encouraged to take the USMLE step 3.

Applications are accepted from August through January. Once the application is received with all the necessary documents, the application will be carefully reviewed and eligible candidates will be called for an interview. Interviews are usually conducted in November, December, January and February. Forty to fifty candidates are invited for an interview every year for the CA-1 positions. The program only offers positions outside of the Match. Applicants have the choice of completing the PGY-I year either at New York Methodist Hospital or elsewhere.
