Cardiothoracic Surgery

Medications and heart procedures such as stenting work effectively to keep arteries to the heart from becoming clogged and slowing blood flow. However, surgery to bypass damaged arteries is sometimes the best option for preventing a heart attack. The New York Methodist-Cornell Heart Center is one of only three programs in Brooklyn approved to perform cardiac surgery and it completes the full continuum of quality heart care offered at the Hospital.

The New York Methodist-Cornell Heart Center is staffed by physicians from the prestigious Weill Cornell Medical Center of New York-Presbyterian Hospital, recently ranked among the top 20 hospitals, nationwide, for its treatment of heart disease in U.S. News & World Report.

The Hospital is also using the proven model for excellence established at Weill Cornell to set standards for the training and credentialing of nurses and technicians, quality assurance, performance measurement, and reporting.

Each patient is cared for through the coordinated efforts of a team of experienced surgeons, cardiologists (heart doctors), pulmonologists (lung doctors), gastroenterologists (stomach and intestine doctors), medical and radiation cancer specialists, intensivists (doctors who practice intensive-care medicine), surgical and intensive care nurses, and respiratory therapists.
