Resolve to quit smoking this spring! Come learn helpful tips on smoking cessation from a pulmonary specialist at New York Methodist Hospitals workshop, Kicking the Habit. The free workshop will take place on Monday, May 3, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Pulmonary Conference Room, located in Wesley House 7A, 501 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States. Each year about 700,000 Americans suffer from a new or recurrent stroke. May is American Stroke Month and in observance, New York Methodist Hospital will sponsor Stroke Alert Day. This health fair will feature free screenings as well as stroke risk assessment. There will be free educational information from the American Stroke Association and NYMs healthcare professionals will be available to answer questions. Stroke Alert Day will take place on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Hospitals Medical Office Pavilion Lobby, 263 Seventh Avenue, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Approximately 400,000 Americans are living with multiple sclerosis (MS), and each week 200 additional individuals are diagnosed. New York Methodist Hospital offers a free support group for individuals diagnosed with MS during the past two years. The Living with MS Support Group offers information and a place to begin to discuss concerns, experiences and resources. The group meets weekly on Thursdays through July 1, 2010 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (No meeting will be held the week of Memorial Day). The meetings will take place in the Hospitals Spine and Arthritis Center located on the second floor of the Medical Office Pavilion, Reception Area #2, 263 Seventh Avenue, Park Slope, Brooklyn. A measure of a neighborhood's strength is the extent to which its residents share their time and talents in voluntary activity in their community. On Thursday, May 13, 2010, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., New York Methodist Hospital and over 90 other local organizations will gather together for a Community Volunteer Fair. The fair will be an opportunity for Brooklynites to meet with and talk to a variety of organizations that depend on the services of volunteers. The Cancer Support Group now meets on the second Friday of every month. This month the group will meet on Friday, May 14, 2010 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Both a physician and a chaplain lead the group. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a rare but serious disease that causes high blood pressure in the lungs. Symptoms of pulmonary hypertension include shortness of breath, fatigue, dizzy spells, chest pain and fainting. New York Methodist Hospital now has a free support group for those that have been diagnosed with PH. The first meeting of the Pulmonary Hypertension Support Group will be held on Monday, May 17, 2010 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The meeting will take place in the Hospitals Wesley House, Room 7A, 501 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Obesity is an epidemic that impacts over nine million Americans. More and more people who are affected by obesity are seeking to learn about surgical weight reduction. New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Surgical Weight Reduction Information Seminar and Support Group. This month the group will meet on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Thursday, May 27, 2010 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. During the first 30 minutes of the seminar, a surgeon will conduct an information session for individuals who are interested in learning about the surgery. A 90-minute support group meeting open to pre- and post-operative patients will follow the information session.
